This book is a must have if you are thinking of getting or already have a young GSD. (Actually this book is good for any person with a young dog.) The author walks you through her experiences with her GSD, Cooper, and discusses quite openly the trials and tribulations she encountered. The book catches you from the beginning and you can’t wait to see what Cooper does next and if he achieves the goals Denine has set for him. How can you not fall in love with Cooper with the awesome picture of him on the front cover? The author also includes a wealth of information at the end of each chapter with “Lessons Learned” and a selection of very pertinent Web Resources. I am buying a couple more so that I have them to give out to people who need this book….GO COOPER!

Denine and Cooper: a great story, March 2, 2012

German Shepherds are great dogs once they know what their boundaries are. Ms. Phillips has taken her own experiences with Cooper and set them down in clear prose to help others dealing with similar situations. There are lots of heartwarming details here that make this a definite winner for dog-lovers.

I grew up in a German Shepherd household, my mom was a lover of the breed so there were dogs and puppies around all of the time. I continue that tradition to this day with having a few German Shepherd Dogs living at my feet so I know what a cute little bundle of fur at 8 weeks old can turn into if their owner doesn’t give the puppy the rules and boundaries to send them down their life’s path and it usually isn’t a pretty picture or scenario. I found that this book was full of “Yup, I had that happen” or “Been there, done that” moments which made me laugh because I remember wanting to crawl under a rock when those things happened to me. At the end of each chapter there is a checklist of life lessons learned by this first time German Shepherd Dog owner about raising a protective breed dog and each notation is right on key as if a dog trainer wrote them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a dog as a family pet for the first time, new puppy owners or even if you are a longtime owner. The story is a heartwarming one and an easy read of the everyday life of a family owned by a German Shepherd Dog and the things they can pull on you if you are not prepared. The book tells of a weak moment in time when the owner, after seeing some unwanted behavior from her dog thought about returning him to his breeder even though she loved Cooper dearly but then remembered someone telling her “Don’t Give Up on That Dog” and did just that. She did right by her dog and showed him leadership and learned she could change unwanted behaviors herself by training, socializing, giving the dog jobs to keep him busy and out of trouble. Our dogs are a labor of love but they are worth it and this book tells you what joy a dog in your life can bring you if you do right by the dog and not give up on them.
