I have this exact backpack/carrier. I bought it at Petsmart for $24.00, the preprinted price on the tag from the manufacturer. I double checked the dimensions and features, and this is the exact same bag. So, if you decide on this model, check there first. It is almost perfect for my needs and the comfort and safety of my 10 lb cat. The tag says the weight limit is up to 16 lbs and that looks about right.

It is very stylish. The sides and top are done in a quilted nylon fabric look that mimics a very expensive line of designer handbags. The bottom also sits on four raised hard plastic feet, again the look of a designer bag. I mention this because it is not evident from the description or the picture. It is definitely a handbag/backpack/carrier hybrid.

In addition to the other information from the previous reviewer, this carrier has a great feature – a plush, removable, washable faux lambskin liner attached in multiple places generously with sturdy velcro. The soft liner is velcroed to the removable nylon covered hard bottom board which is then velcroed to the inside soft bottom of the carrier. This makes for a very sturdy bottom that will not shift around at all yet is easy to remove and clean.

There is a ring inside in the upper back on the entrance side which I assume is to hook a pet’s collar or short leash to keep them from coming out the side that folds down half-way and latches to allow the pet to poke their head through. My cat would bolt, so I won’t be opening that window any time soon. I do like that it has a sturdy metal latch to hold it open though and out of the pet’s way, if one chooses to use it.

My bag does have the three zipper compartments as advertised: two large, one each on the front and back, and one small on the half-window end, plus there is an open compartment pouch covering the back-side zipper pouch that would hold papers, wipes, or other such things that you would to access easily. The zipper pulls and hardware are metal, and the mesh is very sturdy. The zippers are plastic. It is made in China.

Mine came with the waist strap to anchor the bag in place for backpack use, but I won’t be using it that way. To use the shoulder strap feature, you simply let the straps all the way out and grasp them in the middle and pull – instant double shoulder straps. It also has a nice padded short handle to carry it in your hand if you prefer. I would have loved to have had a padded velcro wrap around handle that would hold the two straps together on my shoulder for more stability and comfort. I’m sure I have an extra one on a gym bag somewhere I can use.

The only negative comment I have is that I would have liked to have had more mesh openings. It is completely closed on the backside, 1/3 mesh on the front side, half mesh on one end and all mesh on the other. The top is only as wide as the hand carry strap, about 2″, so there is no mesh there. The ventilation is OK, but I would have liked a bit more and perhaps less zipper storage. If the object was to make this look more like a designer handbag and less like a carrier, they succeeded while retaining adequate function. The pet will be no worse off for it actually.

I don’t know if it fits under all airline seats or if your airline will allow it. CALL AHEAD to be sure! Now, if they only made these in a leopard print ….

Threw away the box way too soon., March 2, 2006

This review is from: Sherpa Backpack Pet Carrier, Small/Medium, Black (Misc.)

We purchased this “backpack” as transport for our new papillon puppy because we wanted an easy way to tote our pet while riding on a bike or traveling via air. This is a good idea gone wrong. I’m not entirely sure anyone ever actually put a pet in the carrier.

As a handheld carrier, it’s OK, but as a backpack it stinks. Our papillon is about 8 pounds and has a pretty small frame. She’ll only get to about 9-10 pounds, so this should have been perfect. Here are the things that don’t work: 1) when used as a backpack, the side closest to my back nearly crushes my puppy because it doesn’t have enough support to maintain its shape. I’m hoping this will stretch out over time, but I’m not holding my breath (even though my puppy nearly has to hold hers). 2) the padding on the bottom of the carrier is completely useless as it is not attached to the bottom (i.e. via Velcro); when the padding is not there, there is a strange plastic-y bottom with lots of nice little plastic treats for my puppy to eat. 3) my puppy is 8 pounds right now; I seriously think it would be animal cruelty to put a 16 lb pet in such a cramped space, as the product description seems to allow.

We’re going to try to reinforce the back of the carrier so that little Amelie can rest more comfortably. Unfortunately, I threw away the packing materials for this because I didn’t want to carry the box home from work. I guess I’m going to have to be creative!
